Before I could read or write, I wanted to be a pianist. I believe it was the late great Liberace I saw on TV when I was a toddler and supposedly, I was glued to the set! Like most kids, I had private piano lessons but lived miles away from a conservatory. Pursuing a musical career seemed too far out of reach. Music remained a hobby – but, like most hobbies, it became secondary to other priorities.
Now that I’m older, and hopefully much wiser, I am back on the keys. But, what to play? I want something new, something different. Not classical and precise, not rock or blues, something that breathes and moves with the story it shows the listener. For me, the music genre is “New Age” piano.
I signed up for an online piano course called Quiescence. This course is specifically designed to teach folks how to make their own music in the New Age style. Today is day one of my course. Wish me luck!
… the journey begins. Not exactly the way I’d envisioned this beginning. I had a very restless night of sleep. Too bad I forgot to wear my FitBit – it would confirm that I only slept a couple hours!
Yet, I still managed to get out of bed at the earlier start time and focus on all the things I am going to need for Day One – my clean/healthy breakfast, my healthy lunch, nutritious snacks, gym bag packed, piano course materials and my novel notes ready.
Although I am breaking one “rule” I set for myself already – I’m allowing one cup of caffeine.
Given the restless night I had and the fact that I have to be civilized and humane on the day job in a few hours, I believe I owe it to my coworkers and clients to ease into the decaf thing.
On tap for today, my clean eating, 1,000 new words on my novel and my music lesson, which I’ll profile in a separate blog post for the day.
I’ll check back in later and report how Day 1 ended. 😉
The day is now about done. I wasn’t perfect today, but I followed the plan and I got it all done! Progress, right? I don’t expect to do all 3 things each day, but that’s the target. First priority right now is the clean eating and fitness routine (more on that Friday).
Last year I challenged myself to 100 days of focus on me – just me. I made myself the priority. Too often, I set aside what I want to do with my time. Then, once I have time, I’m too tired or just fritter my time away on distractions. It’s time to turn that around!
Join me as I embark on another 100 days, starting tomorrow.
In this year’s 100-day challenge, I will focus on three key areas: 1) healthy living (proper diet and exercise), 2) writing (1000 new words per day) and 3) completion of a New Age piano course.
I plan is to check several times a week on my progress overall. But three times a week I will provide more detailed posts on each of my focus areas:
- Mondays = Musical Notes
- Wednesdays = Writer’s Window
- Fridays = Fitness Essentials
I’d love to have some company on this journey – and I’d love to hear about your successes and struggles. I hope you’ll join in the fun, and 100 days from now we’ll all have a lot to celebrate!
